BURLINGTON, N.C. — Burlington Police charged a man with hit and run after they say he crashed his car into a retention pond on Wednesday night and didn't report it.
Police were notified of the accident on Thursday morning. It happened on Kirkwood Drive beside Truliant Federal Credit Union.
Police say it appeared the driver ran off the road, hit a chain link fence, and submerged the entire car in the pond.
Rescue crews say no one was found inside the vehicle. Police tracked down the owner, Matthew Daniel Browning, at his home. Browning said he was driving too fast around a curve when he crashed into the pond. He then went home without notifying police about the accident.
Burlington Fire officials say one firefighter and one police officer had minor injuries while in the water checking for victims.
Police say equipment used in rescue efforts was damaged beyond repair, totaling $3,000.
The car was a total loss with an estimated cost of $20,000. Damage to the fence was about $2,500.
Police charged Browning with hit and run property damage.
