This is one of those national days that the donut shops have picked up on, but this has been a national day for long before there were freebie donuts out there.
National Donut Day began in 1938.
It honors the Salvation Army "Donut Girls" who served soldiers coffee and donuts during both World Wars. It started when two volunteers got crafty and fried donuts in soldier's helmets. The treats were given to boost morale on the front lines. The unofficial holiday is celebrated every year on the first Friday in June.
How did donuts or doughnuts get their name?
The history of the doughnut comes from Danish settlers. They had what they called fried cakes. It was a cake that had a nut embedded into the center of it.
