RALEIGH, N.C. — From Apple Pay to Google Pay, many of us also use our phones to keep up with things such as concert tickets, airplane tickets, and even car insurance cards, but what about your driver's license?
Lawmakers are considering using cell phones to store driver's licenses digitally.
House Bill 199 contains a digital license provision, which, if passed, would allow people to decide whether they want a mobile license.
The DMV commissioner supports the idea, saying it's more secure than a physical card.
The bill is headed to a Senate committee, so it has a ways to go before potentially becoming law. If the bill passes through the General Assembly and the governor signs it, it will go into effect in July 2025.
