KERNERSVILLE, N.C. -- A former teacher charged with 19 different sexual offenses against two different students.
Rebecca Swinson faces 16 charges of indecent liberties with a student, and 3 charges of a sex act with a student.
WFMY News 2 has confirmed that Swinson was not only a teacher at East Forsyth High School, but also a Women's Cross Country coach.
We spoke with a psychoterapist about how you can protect your children.
Both psychoterapists, and the police say the biggest thing you can do is be involved in your child's everyday life. Many times these acts come on very slowly, and that is when you can intervene.
"It probably was not just a quick thing. This -- someone had the thought and then it happened. There is typically grooming behavior involved," said Dr. Nannette Funderburk, co-owner of the SEL group in Greensboro.
Obviously this is a very tricky subject, so just being there can be a big help.
"It just means be vigilant, because you possibly have a very well meaning, and well-intentioned person working with your child so that's where parents being involved, and caregivers being involved really makes a difference," said Dr. Funderburk.
Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools confirms Swinson was a teacher at East Forsyth High School but was placed on suspension once the investigation started and has since been let go after police arrested her.
Swinson was given $150,000 unsecured bond is due in court in September.
