Did you get the discount? 2 Wants To Know clears up property tax deadline issue

Randolph County will honor all early payments made in person or via mail as of EOB 9/4.

RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. — You know the drill. Your county property taxes are due and if you pay them early, you get a small discount. Folks lined up in Randolph County's Tax Office Wednesday to take advantage of the discount, but things didn't go as planned.

"I've done this every year. I'll wait until the last day to pay my taxes for the discount date. When I went in there they said that the discount date had to be paid by yesterday, September 3, 2024, and I said that is not what it says on my bill. It says to pay by September 4, 2024," said April Fisher, a Randolph County resident.

When you look at the bill, it shows the discount due date as 9/1/2024,  but that was Sunday. County offices are closed.  Either way, the bill said:  Correct Due If Paid By 9/4.

April contacted 2 Wants To Know about the issue and we contacted the Randolph County County Manager's office. Within an hour or so, we got a response from Zeb Holden, Randolph County Manager.

“Randolph County apologizes for any confusion arising this morning regarding the timing of discounted property tax payments. Given this confusion, the County will of course honor the 2% discount for early payments through today (9/4). Payments for 2024 property taxes arriving in our office or USPS Postmarked before 5 pm on Wednesday, September 4th will be eligible for the early payment discount. Citizens who did not have the discount appropriately applied this morning will have the difference refunded. Randolph County appreciates our citizens taking advantage of the 2% early payment discount on property taxes, and we will be clearer on future tax bills about the discounted timeframe.”

April was happy to hear it was resolved so quickly.

"I am very happy that they're gonna make sure because if we put forth an effort to go, even though it was the last day we put forth the effort to go and pay it, what, three months early. So we should be given the discount," said Fisher.

If you paid your taxes early in Randolph County whether in person or you sent in your payment by the end of business yesterday,  you're going to get the discount.

This is an example of how 2 Cares about your money.
