GREENSBORO, NC -- Before you rip up your yard to plant Spring flowers or give your landscape a facelift, ask yourself this question -- do you know what's underneath?
April is National Safe Digging month, and the organization North Carolina 811 wants you to dial "811" before you dig.
It's a non-profit organization that provides free information to excavators, homeowners and contractors about the history of an area. The information can prevent diggers from cutting up and damaging phone lines, gas lines, power lines, protected land and more.
NC 811 executive director Louis Panzer said the organization's motto is "call 811, so you don't have to call 911."
The toll-free number for those who live outside North Carolina is 1-800-632-4949.
