ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. -- A man was shot by a Rockingham County Sheriff's Deputy after investigators say he pointed a handgun at him.
The deputy-involved shooting happened at a home on Nell Road in Madison on Monday afternoon.
The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office says Deputy Clayton Doss responded to a 911 hangup call at the home. When he arrived, he made contact with a woman. Shortly after, the sheriff's office says a man confronted Deputy Doss and pointed a handgun at him.
That's when Deputy Doss drew his gun and shot the man, according to a release. Deputy Doss radioed for emergency medical assistance and began giving CPR to the man.
The suspect, Scott James Daniels, was treated and released from a local hospital.
The sheriff's office says Daniels' wife and three kids were inside the home and weren't hurt.
Daniels was charged with felony Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Law Enforcement Officer with Intent to Kill, felony Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer with a Firearm, felony Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Government Official, misdemeanor Assault on a Female, misdemeanor Assault by Pointing a Gun and misdemeanor Interfering with 9-1-1 Communications.
Daniels was placed in the Rockingham County Detention Center under a $1,030,000 secured bond. He has a court date of April 25.
Deputy Doss has been placed on Administrative Duties pending the NC SBI's investigation, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
