ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — Deputies said a husband and wife are dead after a murder-suicide in Burlington Friday.
The sheriff's office said it happened at a home on the 3000 block of Beaver Creek Road.
Deputies responded to the shots fired call around 7:12 a.m.
When deputies arrived, they found Lourdes Vega dead inside a nearby home, where law enforcement said she ran to escape gunfire.
Deputies said Lourdes Vega's estranged husband, Victor Vega, returned to the home he shared with his wife on the 3000 block of Beaver Creek Road.
At the time deputies were unaware of the the whereabouts of Victor Vega, so deputies requested the Sheriff’s Office Special Response team and drones in an attempt to find him.
Deputies found Victor Vega dead inside an out-building, they determined it was from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Investigators said during the separation from wife Lourdes Vega, Victor Vega lived in an apartment in Burlington.
The Alamance County Sheriff's Office said no law enforcement official used their firearm in this case.
"We responded with crisis negotiators because we didn't know what we had at first when we got on scene," explained Public Information Officer Byron Tucker. "The first officer on scene realized that there was a deceased individual, then that's when, again, we started rolling more and more units out -- not only for the community's protection but for the officer's protection."
The investigation is ongoing.
