Debby set to bring heavy rain and flooding, the Triad prepares

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Folks living near Latham Park and Buffalo Creek are no stranger to flooding that can take place there.

The city has already put out signage in the places that need it most, like the small bridge going over Buffalo Creek, urging drivers to stay away once things get really bad and waters in the area rise.

WFMY News 2's Nixon Norman spoke with two men living in the area, both preparing themselves for the next couple of days.

One of them is Warren Demby, he has lived in Latham Park for three decades.

He said in the time he’s lived here, water has made its way under his home due to flooding. This year, he’s closing up his outdoor vents. He said it’s his first time preparing this way.

“I've had several instances with the water under the house and I've decided I would close my vents off so they would not leak water.” Demby said. “It [the outdoor vents] closes when it gets cold, and it’s not gonna get cold, so, the vent will stay open, so I blocked it off. One here, one on that side of the house and one on the driveway side.”

Other neighbors in the area aren’t concerned about flooding as they live on higher ground, like Jeter Walker, he lives in a nearby condominium. He said he needs to get prepared in other ways, by stocking up.

"I have planned this very poorly. I have just come back from a two week vacation, I have nothing in my house and I've got to fill up everything in the refrigerator.” Walker said. "I don’t want to get caught by that rising water, so after this, I'm headed to the grocery store to see if they’ve run out of toilet paper yet."

In the time they both have lived here, they said they have seen plenty of people stall out their cars by driving through the flooding in Latham park, they urge you not to be one of them.

"We’ve had numerous times they’ve rescued people who try to drive through here and their car stalls, we have to pull them out of the car, it’s happened numerous times, people just don’t pay attention," Demby said.

“You know, I know everyone has heard this but don’t take a chance, do not drive through standing water. Try and stay out of that and try to stay safe," Walker said.
