Deadly plane crash by US 421: Here's what we know so far

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the plane crash that killed a man and left one critically injured Tuesday.

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) was in Guilford County on Wednesday to investigate the deadly plane crash that happened on the side of Highway 421 near Monnett Road.

The plane took off from Greensboro Executive Airport on Tuesday and crashed shortly before noon. It crashed into an overpass and caught fire on the side of the highway.

Kurtis Dale Williams, 52, died as a result of the crash.

James Anthony Foecking, 39, survived the crash, suffering serious injuries. He was taken to UNC-Chapel Hill Hospital where he is in stable condition.

The NTSB said at this time, they don't know who was flying the plane.

Both men were commercial pilots and did not own the aircraft. The owner has been contacted.

Adam Gerhardt, NTSB senior air safety investigator, shared what he knew so far in a Wednesday press briefing.

He said the plane was a two-seater amateur-built plane, made in 2021. The NTSB doesn't know how long it was in the air before crashing.

Several witnesses said the plane was approaching Highway 421 and hit the overpass.

Gerhardt said he isn't sure why the plane was approaching the highway.

The NTSB is looking at the plane, weather, and what the pilots were doing.

The plane has since been recovered and the preliminary report should be issued in about ten days. A final report will be issued in 12-18 months.

Gerhardt said the most important thing is documenting perishable evidence and with the passage of time, it'll get harder to collect evidence.

NTSB is asking for witnesses to share what they may know by emailing witness@ntsb.gov if they think what they saw will help the investigation.
