WASHINGTON — The holiday season is almost upon us, and for those already thinking about decking the halls, a century's-old tradition is returning this year to bring some cheer.
The National Christmas Tree Lighting is returning for the 101st time on Thursday, Nov. 30 at President's Park in Washington, D.C.
The national holiday tradition was first celebrated in 1923 by President Calvin Coolidge. Since then, the event has continued to inspire and help people enjoy cherished traditions -- as well as make new memories. The tree lighting features musical performances and the official ringing in of the holiday season. Last year, the nation's capitol saw the talents of Shania Twain, Ariana DeBose, Yolanda Adams, Andy Grammer, Gloria Estefan, and LL Cool J, who hosted the event.
The National Park Service (NPS) and the National Park Foundation (NPF) is welcoming people to usher in the second century of the lighting with free tickets through an online lottery. Here are six dates to know for the 2023 tree lighting ceremony:
- Nov. 1: Free ticket lottery opens at 10 a.m. ET
- Nov. 8: Free ticket lottery closes at 3 p.m. ET
- Nov. 15: Lottery results announced
- Nov. 30: National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony
- Dec. 2: The National Christmas Tree site opens to the public
- Dec. 15: CBS Network will broadcast the National Christmas Tree Lighting special at 8 p.m. ET.
To enter the lottery to try to get the free tickets, visit www.recreation.gov and click “TICKET LOTTERY.” People can also call 877-444-6777 to enter the lottery. Lottery applicants will be notified about their ticket status on Nov. 15.
