RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. — Deputies said a man attacked EMS workers while being evaluated in the back of an ambulance on Sunday.
Randolph County Sheriff's Office said deputies got a call about EMS workers in danger in the area of Highway 42 near Glenn Country Road.
Officials reported that the man became agitated while EMS workers were assessing him, and that's when he unbuckled his seat belt and began a struggle with one of the workers, grabbing a syringe with a needle in the process.
Officials said the ambulance came to a stop and the EMS workers escaped the back of the vehicle, but the man followed and attacked them again. Moments after, several firefighters arrived and held the man down.
Deputies arrived and were able to detain the man, according to a release.
Following release after evaluation, the man was taken to Randolph County Detention Center. His charges include felony assault on emergency personnel physical injury, misdemenaor resist/obstruct/delay, and misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon.
Deputies said another man who tried to intervene in the struggle was charged with assault on government official.
Troopers said two responding deputies were involved in a fender bender with each other while heading to the scene. Both deputies only had minor injuries.
