VOLUSIA COUNTY, FL -- The Volusia County Sheriff's Department had Kenneth Stancil III in jail Tuesday morning.
Stancil was wanted in connection to a shooting at Wayne County Community College in Goldsboro Monday.
Our news partners at WRAL report the Volusia County Beach Patrol found Stancil sleeping on a beach just before 1:30 Tuesday morning. They also report Goldsboro Police say Stancil was carrying a knife at the time of his arrest, but he was taken into custody without incident.
The Volusia County Jail website says he's being held on a fugitive from justice charge without bond. WRAL says Wayne County are working to have him extradited back to North Carolina.
Investigators have not discussed a motive in the shooting but told WRAL TV they are looking into the possibility that it was a hate crime. They would not elaborate but confirmed to the news station hat Lane's sexual orientation and Stancil's possible affiliation with white supremacist groups or gangs are being examined.
Stancil, who will be extradited to North Carolina, appeared relaxed when he was brought into the courtroom, addressed the judge as "sir" and told him he doesn't blame him for recommending no bond in his case. Before Stancil's admission in court, the judge and an attorney tried to advise him of his right to remain silent.
