GREENSBORO, N.C. - A real estate developer has placed a new sign up in Greensboro that has a lot of folks talking: "Coming Soon: Trader Joe's ?" The sign is at Elm St. and Gate City Blvd. near downtown.
The sign has a website for the developer behind the Gateway. Andy Zimmerman, whose name is on the sign, says he's in discussions with several opportunities to bring a market to the building. In an email, Zimmerman said 'We need a market downtown, especially on the south side, and I won’t stop looking and working until I get one.'
This sign comes after Greensboro City Council members sent a letter to the company's CEO, asking for the grocery store to reconsider coming to Greensboro.
It says: "Seldom does a day pass that citizens do not reach out to us and express the enthusiasm for the Trader Joe's brand."
Trader Joe's considered a spot near the Friendly Center but pulled out in 2014 because of pushback from neighbors.
The only Trader Joe's in the Triad can be found in Winston-Salem.
