City of Greensboro begins enforcing new leaf collection rules

Failure to remove leaves properly could eventually lead to fines.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The City of Greensboro started enforcing new leaf collection rules on November 1, according to city officials.

Now, residents whose leaves are left in the street will receive a "door hanger" from city staff with a warning letting them know they have 14 days to remove the leaves. If the leaves aren't removed after 14 days, the resident will be fined $75.

If another 14 days have gone by and the resident hasn't cleaned up the leaves and paid the $75 fine, they will be fined $500 in addition to the cost of cleanup.

You can report "improperly prepared leaves that create a nuisance" to the city at 336-373-2489.

The City of Greensboro offered the following tips for proper leaf disposal:

1. Put your fall yard waste, including leaves, in your 95-gallon gray yard waste cart. If you need an additional 95-gallon yard waste cast, please call 336-373-2489 to buy one for $65.

2. Bag additional leaves using paper yard waste bags and/or bundle sticks with natural twine.

3. Leave your leaves where they fall. Leaves provide important habitats for many different species.

4. Compost or mulch your leaves.
