The famous Christmas Balls at Sunset Hills has officially begun

While a majority of the now famous lights will not be up until after Thanksgiving, some are already lit up for Greensboro residents to enjoy!

GREENSBORO, N.C. — In the iconic Sunset Hills, neighbors are ready.

“Starting Sunday the park will be lit, the neighbors will start hanging up the balls themselves and after Thanksgiving you will definitely start seeing the whole neighborhood come together," said Gabe Chauvigna-Futrell.

Chauvigna-Futrell has lived here for over half his life and continuing that tradition of lighting Christmas balls has been a core memory for a majority of those years.

“You know, when I was in college it was less often, and now that we’re back here it’s me and my wife really hanging them up in our yard," Chauvigna-Futrell said.

Of course, Gabe isn’t alone. His next door neighbor, John Kelly, has also been instrumental in not only putting his own up, but also the ones at the park itself.

“Most of the learning comes from my neighbor, John Kelly, he’s the ball goat! He hangs them up in the whole park, so I’ve just followed after him and followed his example," said Chauvigna-Futrell said.

Whoever is putting these festive lights in the air, the Sunset Hills tradition is set to continue this weekend, and it’s not slowing down anytime soon.

“I think it’s just the start of the season for Christmas for everybody and the holidays in general, and being able to come out with you friends and family and showing them around the neighborhood and that’s something unique in Greensboro and sunset Hills. I think it’s really cool," reminisced Chauvigna-Futrell.

While lights will be partially lit this weekend, the majority of the lights will be up come the end of November after Thanksgiving.
