CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police honored four law enforcement officers who were killed during a standoff in east Charlotte on April 29, including CMPD Officer Joshua Eyer.
The four officers were recognized during the annual Mecklenburg County Peace Officers Memorial Service in Uptown, with Eyer's name being added to the memorial for fallen officers outside CMPD Headquarters. In total, officials memorialized 44 officers who have been killed in the line of duty in Charlotte since 1804.
Dozens of law enforcement officers attended a brief remembrance ceremony and wreath-laying at the memorial for Eyer. From there, a large procession of officers marched from CMPD Headquarters to First Baptist Church, where Eyer's funeral was held on May 3.
Several people spoke during Friday's ceremony, including former Panthers coach Steve Wilks, who recognized the families of the fallen officers for allowing him to give a speech.
"I understand when you give someone that you love so much to others and the sacrifice that you give and he things that you do to support them. Thank you so much," Wilks said.
Friday's service coincided with National Police Week. CMPD maintains a list of Charlotte officers killed in the line of duty on its website.
As a result of the services Friday, the Charlotte Area Transit System will suspend services on the Gold Line streetcar from 6 a.m. until 11 a.m. Buses will be used to transport streetcar customers to Sunnyside Station. Buses will bypass stops on Davidson and McDowell streets.
