125 years and counting: Central Carolina Fair is back with tons of rides and food for fairgoers

Organizers share what all goes into inspecting fair rides before letting people inside of the gates

GREENSBORO, N.C. — It's time for some fun at the fair, but before rides like the Ferris Wheel and Vertigo are put up—

"Each ride on a carnival is taken down completely and then reassembled so we can see internal working of that ride to see if there's an issue," said Darrell Desgranges, Business Agent for Michael's Amusements.

Fayetteville based company Michael's Amusements is responsible for the 30 different rides you see at the Central Carolina Fair.

Desgranges says inspectors look at parts from top to bottom making sure they are safe for fair goers.

"We are looking for rusts, we are looking for cracks and metal fatigue cracks things that may have come use so it's a continual process," Desgranges said.

A process that is a year in the making –

"We are already planning for 2025. So, what you are seeing now is all last year's planning and changes and making it more user-friendly for the families and the guests and the kids."

A part of the user-friendly aspect is the attention to large wording and signage before a rider gets on a ride.

Desgranges says Michael's Amusements travels from Ohio to Florida, but some of the strictest fair ride inspections are here in North Carolina.

"Each ride has height age and weight requirements on them and we expect everyone to follow those rules our operators are very strict about that" butted "in addition to the North Carolina state inspections that happen we also have daily inspections Michael's Amusement inspections," Desgranges said.

From the rides to the deep-fried foods, the quintessential end to summer marks the start of the fair.

Degranges says this year's festival is bit more special.

"We're celebrating the 125th anniversary so this is the first time we have operated on labor day weekend so it's part of our 125th anniversary butted "so come and enjoy us and come check us out!"

The Central Carolina Fair will be at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex running from now until Sunday September 15th.
