FORT MILL, S.C. -- While Fury 325's popularity is soaring in its freshman season, another Carowinds coaster is ending its run.

After 39 years, Thunder Road will stop on July 26. The park says it's retiring the coaster to make room for other attractions to grow. It's part of a $50 million investment plan.

The ride, named for the 1958 movie, reaches speeds of up to 45 mph. Thunder Road was built with 539,000 feet of treated wood and it cost about $1.6 million to build. This coaster takes park goers on 2 minute 10 second ride, turning in and out of North and South Carolina. It was originally modeled after another one in an Ohio park called The Racer.

Carowinds says fans have taken nearly 40 million rides on Thunder Road.

The park's oldest coaster is Carolina Goldrusher.
