CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A $40,000 grant has been awarded to North Carolina and South Carolina to promote early childhood literacy and healthy relationships.

The grant was made possible by a record-setting donation from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott to the nonprofit organization Reach Out and Read.

The funds will be used to support 10 projects, for a total of $400,000, around the county, and $40,000 of that goes towards helping families in the Carolinas and Midatlantic. The projects will impact 4.4 million families that have young children. The goal is to strengthen families through shared reading.

The $40,000 will be used to fund Reach Out and Read's Centered in Community project. The goal of this project is to help understand the needs of the diverse communities that Reach Out and Read serves.

“Being in partnership with the communities we serve, considering the books and support that they connect with, and involving all members of the care team in a clinic are all critical parts of achieving our mission as an organization,” Regional Executive Director of Reach Out and Read Callee Boulware said. “This work will make us better informed and closer to the families we are here to serve.”
