GREENSBORO, N.C. — A close call after someone crashed into McKay's Bookstore on Battleground Avenue.
Fortunately, the business wasn't damaged to the point that it had to close.
"I was the first manager to respond to the incident. I was actually sleeping when it happened," said assistant manager, Joe Blondino.
He says early Sunday morning, he received a call that a car had smashed through the front of the store.
"Normally we get an alarm called like that it's someone breaking in through the side door, but this is definitely the first vehicular incident we've had," said Blondino.
One manager captured a photo of the store, right after the crash happened.
The glass, shattered.
Books that lined the wall were scattered across the store.
"No one got hurt. It was at 3:30 in the morning, so no employees were here, the young man was also unfazed, so that's good," said Blondino.
Luckily, the damage was confined to the purchasing counter which was not open on Sunday.
Throughout the rest of the store, things were business as usual.
Blondino says that is good news since the weeks following Christmas are some of their busiest of the year.
"You would think the first week of Christmas would be the busiest week but really it's the weeks after Christmas that are even busier. Kids are out of school, people have gift cards that they want to spend, they have Christmas money they want to spend so the week after Christmas they kind of swamp us and buy all the cool stuff up," said Blondino.
Blondino says the buying counter should reopen on Monday.
He is hopeful their unexpected new years remodel will be cleaned up and repaired later this week.
"We're waiting on the glass people to get back to us. It being Sunday and New Year's they may be a couple of days, but hopefully during the week will get this looking pretty again," said Blondino.
We reached out to the Greensboro Fire Department for more information on the crash, but have not received a response.
