Man charged with first-degree murder after a 7-year-old dies from being hit by stray bullet, Burlington police says

A third person has been arrested in connection to the shooting, according to the Burlington Police Department.

BURLINGTON, N.C. — UPDATE: The original story has been updated with the additional arrest and charges.

The Burlington Police Department executed two search warrants regarding the ongoing investigation of the 7-year-old boy who was killed by a stray bullet in Burlington last Thursday.

Syquan Jaheem Mason-Rhames, 24, of Burlington, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. The bond for Mason-Rhames has not been set.

The Burlington Police Department is holding a press conference at 4 p.m. on Monday to address the investigation of the shooting.

Two people were arrested in connection with the shooting, according to the Burlington Police Department. The original charges involving both the 18-year-old and the 21-year-old were the result of intentionally false and misleading statements made to officers. 

The 18-year-old's charges have been amended from attempted first-degree murder to possession of a stolen firearm. The 21-year-old charges have been amended to possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a stolen firearm.

Family and the Burlington Police Department confirmed Mason Jenkins, the 7-year-old boy, died on Sunday morning. A prayer vigil was held on Sunday evening to honor the boy's life. 

The investigation is ongoing.
