BURLINGTON, N.C. — Police said they responded to a crisis situation that closed I-40 in Burlington for hours Saturday.
Officers said around 4 a.m. the Burlington Communications Center received a 911 hang-up call.
Telecommunicators informed Burlington police and they responded to a 25-year-old woman experiencing a mental health crisis inside a car with two children on an eastbound lane of I-40.
Police said the woman made comments during the call that led officers to believe she may have been armed.
Members of the Burlington Regional Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT), including Crisis Negotiators arrived and assisted in the situation.
Investigators said the woman was detained without incident and the children were safely removed from the situation around 7 a.m.
Police said the woman is being treated at a hospital.
I-40 east and west were closed for nearly four hours, it has since reopened.
Police said there is no further threat to the public.
