Pushback on Buc-ee's coming to Mebane

An environmental group delivered a petition on Wednesday, urging city leaders to keep the mega gas station out of Mebane.

MEBANE, N.C. — An organization wants to keep the popular convenience store chain Buc-ee's away from the Triad.

A group of about 20 people gathered in front of Mebane City Hall on Wednesday afternoon and handed in a petition. They're urging city leaders to vote against the mega gas station from opening in the city.

7 Directions of Service is an Indigenous-led group that advocates for preserving nature.

The planning board rejected a Buc-ee's proposal off of I-40 and Trollingwood-Hawfields Road in December, but it's up to the city council to make the final decision.

The city council is holding a special meeting on Monday about the Buc-ee's proposal to build a location off the highway. If approved, the gas station would have 120 pumps, 600 parking spaces, and employ 200 people.
