A bridge in Rockingham County will be named after Jennifer Renee Short, a slain nine-year-old girl whose remains were found under the span. On August 15th, 2002, the bodies of Michael and Mary Short were discovered in their home in Oak Level, Virginia, and a national search began for their missing daughter, Jennifer. On September 25th, 2002, Jennifer's skeletal remains were found beneath a bridge on Grogan Road near Stoneville, North Carolina. The crime remains unsolved. It's that bridge, covered with flowers and teddy bears after Jennifer was found, that the North Carolina Board of Transportation decided Thursday to name the Jennifer Renee Short Memorial Bridge. Jim Whitehead, an uncle of Jennifer's, hopes to hold a memorial service there September 25th.
