GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Piedmont Triad Airport Authority said Boom Supersonic, one of the airport’s newest tenants, announced they had a successful first flight of the XB-1.
The XB-1 is the world’s first independently developed supersonic jet.
The flight took place at the Mojave Air & Space Port in Mojave, California.
Boom is separately developing Overture, Boom’s supersonic airliner, capable of flying twice as fast as today’s commercial planes on up to 100% sustainable aviation fuel.
“Congratulations to our partners at Boom on this significant aerospace milestone!” said Authority Chair Paul Mengert.
The assembly of Overture will take place at Boom’s new Superfactory, a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility located on a 62-acre campus at the Piedmont Triad International Airport.
“Innovators, like Boom, are bringing global change to the aerospace industry. Today’s successful XB-1 flight is yet another pivotal achievement, as Boom progresses its development of Overture, which will be assembled in North Carolina’s Carolina Core, here at PTI,” said Kevin Baker, the Authority’s Executive Director.
The Overture Superfactory is expected to be completed later this year.
