WSSU police chief talks safety as 2023 Homecoming weekend approaches

WSSU estimates 10,000 people to attend homecoming festivities.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — This year marks Winston-Salem State University's 131st birthday.

WSSU police said safety is at the top of their mind this year. A school representative said they expect to see nearly 10,000 people attend homecoming festivities this weekend.

For some, Winston-Salem State Rams homecoming is their favorite time of the year.

"I just love my HBCU...I do. I love the environment of higher education. I just love seeing students walk around on campus. This is an exciting time," alumna Joann Hairston said.

Following recent attacks on HBCUs nationwide some homecoming attendees are practicing awareness on campus.

"If I hear any kind of commotion, I say something no matter how small it might be," Hairston said.

Campus police plan on patrolling on foot and in the streets.

"You're gonna have a lot of foot traffic and a lot of vehicle traffic. We ask that people be patient around as they're getting through and armpits. It's going to be a lot of staff directing people to park and things of that nature," WSSU Police Chief Amir Henry said.

He explained safety training and dorm patrols are just some of the university's plans to keep students safe.

"I do see a heavier police presence on campus. I do think it's important so everyone is staying safe and there is some sort of control to the chaos," student Amber Jordan said.
