WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Many black women say their hair tells a story —and that story can often be overlooked.
A Greensboro woman wants to change that. That's why she wrote a ballet to celebrate Black hair culture.
WFMY News 2 photojournalist Jay Capers spoke with Princess Johnson, owner of Royal Expressions Contemporary Ballet, about her efforts to embrace the roots of Black hair.
"We actually are still dealing with hair discrimination in our society," Johnson stated. "It really impacts and affects our success. And I love storytelling through movement. So I wanted to tell this story in a fun, easy-going way to just shed light on something that impacts the black community."
Johnson said when people attend the ballet, she wants them to leave feeling more empowered.
"When the audience leaves, I want them to feel beautiful and free. It's about embracing your hair just as it is and being brave and bold to wear it. Whatever way you want to and know that life will be whatever it will be," Johnson added.
The ballet runs through Saturday at the Reynolds Place Theater.
