City approves remediation plan for Bingham Park and Former Hampton School Site

The park has been closed due to contaminated soil.
Months after Bingham Park closed because of contamination, city leaders are looking at new ways to get it back open.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro city leaders are moving forward with new plans to clean up Bingham Park, which remains closed due to contaminated soil.

The contaminated soil at the park will be locked in by a containment and cover system, according to Greensboro city officials. The stream bank is set to be fully restored.

All waste at the former Hampton School site is slated to be removed and taken to a solid waste landfill. White Street Landfill will not be used in the remediation, the city said.

After the remediation, the city said a nature trail will be built at the park and a new neighborhood park will be built on a portion of the old Hampton School property.

The cost for this remediation option is estimated at $12.4 million. Ten million dollars of the funds are from  State House Bill 259, $7 million will be from the NC Department of Environmental Quality, and $1.05 million from a Federal Appropriations Bill.

The containment and cover option was chosen over full remediation of both properties, according to the city.
