RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina State Superintendent Mark Johnson and lawmakers introduced the North Carolina Classroom Supply program Wednesday in Raleigh.
The program is part of a bill, titled 'Classroom Supplies to Teachers,' to be filed that would provide $400 per eligible teacher to buy school supplies.
"We want to #empower teachers with direct purchasing authority to quickly obtain the resources they need to #support their students," Johnson said in a tweet.
"Too often, public school teachers feel they must spend their own money on class supplies instead of navigate the procurement and reimbursement bureaucracy," Johnson said.
The program, if passed, will allow teachers to use the Classwallet app to buy supplies or be reimbursed for local purchases. Unused funds in the teacher accounts will expire at the end of the fiscal year and revert to the general fund.
The program would begin in the 2019-2020 school year. Charter and other independent public schools would be able to participate using available funding.
