EDEN, N.C. — Bear sightings have been reported in the central area of Eden on Thursday, Nov. 7, according to the Eden Police Department.
Police are warning residents not to go near the bear if it is seen.
To prevent close contact with bears, remember these tips as provided by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission:
Don't feed bears, remove or secure all potential food sources including bird feeders.
Remember, if you find yourself close to a bear, remember these tips provided by the National Park Service:
Stay calm, make yourself look as large as possible and do not run. Be very careful if you see a mama bear and her cubs.
If you see a bear, don't gather in a crowd. This can aggravate the situation and cause the bear to behave unpredictably, according to NC Wildlife.
If a bear attacks, remember this:
If it's a brown or grizzly bear, play dead. Lay flat on your stomach with your hands clasped behind your neck. Be still until the bear leaves the area. If the bear attacks, fight back and use what you have to hit the bear in the fact.
If it's a black bear, don't play dead. Escape to a car or building. If that's not possible, fight back using anything available, aiming towards the fact and muzzle.
