Archdale starts a police department | Vault Visit

On May 28, 1979, we discussed the possibility of police in Archdale.

ARCHDALE, N.C. — This year, WFMY News 2 turns 75! So, to celebrate, we’re opening the WFMY News 2 vault.

On May 28, 1979, we were talking about the possibility of police in Archdale.

The city was incorporated in 1969. They wanted to establish a police department at that time.

But nothing happened until 1978. That's when they hired a chief and one other officer.

But they still didn't have a full department.
They had to come up with the money to pay more.

“We're going to receive $82K in grants this year; we’re also asking for a seven-cent increase in the tax rate, which will bring in about $38K, and the additional $24K where we'd just have to absorb in our budget monies from last year,” an official shared.

Their goal at the time was to create a nine-person police department.

Today, when fully staffed. Archdale police have 30 sworn and six civilian officers.
