Another Publix? Greensboro Confirms Sketch Plan For Popular Grocery Store

Greensboro says a sketch plan has been submitted for a Publix grocery store.

GREENSBORO, NC (WFMY) - Could another Publix be in the works for Greensboro?

Sue Schwartz with Greensboro's planning department confirmed that developer Marty Kotis has submitted a 'sketch plan' for a Publix in a shopping center in the Westover Terrace area on Monday.

A sketch plan is a preliminary site plan that goes through the technical review committee for compliance purposes and brainstorming sessions.

Kotis would only say that he's working on a plan for a three-level grocery store, which includes two levels of parking. The site is scheduled for completion in 2020.

"The closest grocery store to this is up Lawndale," Kotis explains. "So, the reason I think Midtown needs a grocery store is with the new Greenway coming through and the new neighborhoods. The university nearby. It'll be a good fit."

The plan is to put this store in the Westover Gallery of Shops right off of Westover Terrace. He hopes to build it where Printer's Alley, Osteria and a vacant 2-story building are right now. Kotis says all other stores in the plaza wouldn't be affected, at least not negatively.

"The retailers we've been talking to have been very excited. Their sales are going to be through the roof because it's so close to all these great neighborhoods and office buildings nearby."

In January, Publix executed a lease at the corner of West Gate City Boulevard and Guilford College Road at Grandover Village in Greensboro. Publix is also considering an opening a distribution center in east Greensboro.

Publix currently has stores in Winston-Salem, High Point and Clemmons.
