An Almost Disaster Puzzle; How The Shooting That Never Happened Came Together

The Smith High Incident Is Confusing. We want to put those pieces together for you.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — For days we've been piecing together a puzzle about Smith High, and the man who police say brought guns on campus with the intention of killing at least two people.

We want to put those pieces together for you. You've seen the picture of a smiling Steve Spence all week. He is the 29 year old living in Norfolk, Virginia.

He went to East Carolina University to play football, and has some family in the Triad.

However, he isn't the only "who" in this story because there are also three others.

There are the people instrumental in stopping Spence once he got on Campus at Smith High School.

Assistant Principal Lashonti Hines, School Resource Officer D.K. Evans, and Administrative Staff Member Patrick Jordan.

The "what" in the story is the attack court documents show Spence planned to carry out.

Police say he got on campus with 2 guns, and a backpack full of ammo. Court documents showed he also had a hitlist with 5 names of people he planned to kill.

Then there is the "when."

Early Monday morning he assaulted someone in Virginia, stole a car from a woman he knew, and drove it to Smith High School.

He was on campus by 12:40 Monday Afternoon.

We all know where. Greensboro. Smith High School. Right in our own backyard.

The biggest question is why, and it's something we still don't know.

In court on Tuesday, Spence said voices in his head were telling him what to do.

A psychiatric evaluation was ordered. Family members say Spence was in a car accident shortly before all of this. We have yet to confirm that further.
