GREENSBORO, N.C. — Bus drivers face many challenges.
Those challenges can include unruly students, parents wondering where they are, and making sure they're on time. However, a school bus driver in Danville, Virginia faced an all out attack that was capture on a student's cell phone.
After seeing that we wanted to know what bus drivers deal with every day.
"A lot of things go through a driver's head when they are being attacked or there is a threat of being attacked by the student. One of the biggest things -- am I going to lose my job if i hit this child or this student? How do I protect myself," said Curtis Stanley, the Guilford County Schools (GCS) Assistant Transportation Director.
Right now school systems across the state are going through a bus driver shortage.Stacey said being a bus driver can be a stressful job.
You deal with the normal stresses of driving while also trying to corral 40, 50, 60, even 70 students sometimes.
Right now GCS is down about 50 drivers, but say they are trying to recruit more.
During that recruitment process they tell them the perks of the job: decent pay, steady job, flexible hours.
They also make sure once they are hired they train them to have a plan.
"How do you handle these stressful situations? What do you do in these stressful situations? There are do's and dont's. There are instructions of when you take a child back to school or a bus back to school. When do you call the police? That type of thing," said Stacey.
As for the attack video in Danville, police charged the student with assault on the bus driver.
We reached out to the school system this morning to try and get the video from the bus, but didn't hear back.
