GREENSBORO, NC (WFMY) - — Family and activists are remembering Sherri Jackson on 10th anniversary of her body being found. June 26 marks the day authorities found the Greensboro woman buried in the backyard of a Greensboro home.
Beginning at 11:30 am, family and community will gather for prayers and call for action performances as well as a balloon release. The event takes place at Cooper's Ale House located at 415 South Swing Road. Later in the day, at 6 p.m., a candlelight vigil and Purple Candle Auction will hold.
27-year-old Sherri Jackson disappeared and was reported missing in November 2006. Police found her body 19 months later in June 2008. Her ex-boyfriend, DeCarlo Bennett, who was 29 at the time, led investigators to the backyard of his mother's Greensboro home where he had buried Jackson.
Bennett was convicted of second-degree murder and got a minimum 13 years in prison as part of a plea deal for leading authorities to Jackson's body. Jackson was given a final resting place in her hometown of Morganton, NC on July 7, 2008.
A foundation, The Sherri Denese Jackson Foundation, was set up by Portia Shipman in the memory of Jackson. The foundation runs The Purple Door House in Greensboro and provides support and shelter to victims of domestic violence.
