RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) -- April 16, 2016 marks five years since tornadoes ripped through North Carolina, killing 24 people across the state.
A record 30 tornadoes hit North Carolina that Saturday afternoon in 2011, breaking the old record of 20 tornadoes from April 7, 1998, according to State Climate Office of North Carolina (NCSCO).
The devastation was felt the most in the Sanford-Raleigh and Fayetteville-Smithfield areas. One of the five EF-3 tornadoes that hit the state spiraled through Sanford, reaching estimated winds of 160 mph.
The NCSCO reports that damages were estimated at just over $328 million.
