4-Year-Old Gets Gun From Mom's Purse, Shoots Himself: Myrtle Beach Police

Parents were charged after a 4-year-old shot himself while playing in a room alone.

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Myrtle Beach police say a four-year-old shot himself in the head in a tragic accident at a resort Saturday night.

WBTW reports officers were called to Oceans One Resort on Ocean Blvd. South and found a child had been shot in one of the rooms.

Detectives say the child was playing in the room when he got ahold of a handgun from his mother's purse and accidentally shot himself between the eyes. He was taken to the hospital where Myrtle Beach police say he's in critical condition.

The child's parents, Heather Odom and Jeremy Barrett, were charged with Unlawful Neglect of a Child. Both were let out of jail on their own recognizance. Odom and Barrett, both from North Carolina, have a court date for Sept. 14.

Officers say the parents were in another room of the hotel suite while the child shot himself.

Horry County DSS is involved, and working on a safety plan with the grandparents.
