Man Wanted for Shooting 2-Year-Old In Winston-Salem: Police

The child wasn't targeted in the shooting but was close to the intended victim when the gun was fired.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — WINSTON-SALEM, NC (WFMY) - A man is wanted for his involvement in a shooting that injured a two-year-old girl Monday morning in Winston-Salem.

A warrant was issued for David Miller for Assault with a Deadly Weapon. Miller, 29, has multiple charges against him including Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury, Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Discharging a Firearm within the City Limits of Winston-Salem.

Miller was trying to shoot at 30-year-old Vaughn Cook, who was not hurt, according to police. A release lists Cook's address on Bon Air Ave.

The two-year-old was shot Monday morning during an argument between Miller and Cook according to police. The child was on the 3000 block of Bon Air Ave. when they were shot in the foot. Police say there was a disagreement between Miller and Cook that led to Miller shooting a gun in the middle of the road.

A parent confirmed the girl was shot when officers arrived around 10:16 a.m. The child wasn't targeted in the shooting but was close to Cook when the gun was fired. Neighbors rushed to the little girl's aid.

"The 2-year-old got shot in the foot when the baby daddy and the baby momma's brother were tussling over the gun," said neighbor Carmen Bishop who dashed out of her house when she heard the gunshot that followed the commotion.

"I saw the momma out there also and I guess she was trying to break up the fight and the next thing I know she is shouting he shot my baby he shot my baby," added Bishop.

"My neighbor two doors down grabbed the little girl and I went over there and checked on her and the little girl wasn't crying. I rubbed the little baby's head and asked her was she ok."

Police said the child's injuries aren't considered life-threatening and were treated at the scene. The little girl was then transported to the hospital.

Miller ran away from the scene and hasn't been found. The shooting isn't considered a random act and those involved were related or knew each other according to police.

Miller has recently been seen near Cleveland Avenue Homes close to 15th Street and Silas Creek Apartments near Forsyth Technical Community College.

Police are also investigating a similar incident where shots were fired in the 1100 block of East 15h Street around 11:26 Monday morning. Officers don't know yet if the two reports are connected.
