GREENSBORO, N.C. — We've been getting a lot of calls - about calls you're getting lately. Many of you have contacted us about a surge in scam and robocalls.
April McGill from Greensboro called us about a troubling situation. She says her 13-year-old daughter got several calls from an unknown number asking for her social security number. So she returned the call herself.
"I called the number back from her phone," McGill said. "A man answered and announced the agency and it sounded like 'California Social Security Administration.' And I asked him to repeat what agency am I calling again. When I did that he basically hung up the phone."
You can't get rid of these calls completely, but you can get rid of some. The Do Not Call Registry is meant to help you from getting constant telemarketer calls. You can click this link to head to the website or call them at 1-888-382-1222 from the phone that you want to register.
No surprise, scammers don't abide by the registry. So you'll need to contact your phone provider. AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon all have services that'll alert you to a potential scam call. Or consider a call blocking app like Nomorobo, Robokiller, Mr. Number, or YouMail. All will block calls for free or a small charge.
