Verify: Hurricane Lilies Are Not From Hurricanes

But they are related. Here's how.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - After a week of devastation from Hurricane Florence, we could all use a little cheer. And these exotic red blooms popping up around the Triad would make anyone smile. Given the nickname Hurricane Lilies, they came right on time just days after Hurricane Florence moved through.

But are they actually connected to hurricanes?

To verify we went to the University of Florida Gardening Center and Plants and Answers in Greensboro.

"It appears that they come from nothing. they are really fast," said owner Larry Richardson.

Growing within 2 days fast. He says Hurricane plants got their name because they bloom at the end of Hurricane season.

"They can be called surprise lilies, they can be called necked lilies, as we say in the south necked instead of naked. And they can be called spider lilies."

And the University of Florida adds you don't have to have a Hurricane but the flowers "appear in late summer, usually after a heavy rain."

So the claim these flowers are caused by hurricanes is false.

One more thing, enjoy the blooms now because they won't last long.
