GREENSBORO, N.C. — The summer season means more people will get outside and enjoy things like trips to the pool, beach and other outdoor activities.
Making sure your eyes are protected every time you head outside is important.
"Sunlight can get through the clouds so anytime you are exposed to the sun, you want to make sure you have a good pair of sunglasses on," said Dr. Kimberly Orr, with Triangle Visions Optometry Kernersville.
While the sun is more intense in the summer months, you do want to wear them year round.
The sunglasses you buy does matter. You don't need to buy the more expensive option, but you also don't want to buy the least expensive option either. It's all about the quality of the lens.
You want to look for a marking on the sunglasses that says "100% UVA UVB protection" to make sure they are a good quality. If you need protection from the glare, look for a polarized option.
Another option is prescription sunglasses. They are a great option for people who may struggle with their vision but want to protect their eyes in the sun.
Transition glasses are another option. Your glasses will transition to sunglasses when they are exposed to sunlight.
Sunglasses are not just for adults, they provide protection for younger eyes as well.
"Just like kids have to wear sunscreen when they are younger, when they are getting the most exposed to UV radiation. So start them early, keep them protected from the sun by wearing sunglasses, hats and sunscreen," said Dr. Orr.
In addition to sunglasses, wide brim hats provide great sun protection in the summer, as well as wider wrap around sunglasses.
