The scammer begins by asking if you've gotten your new Social Security Card. No matter what you answer, the scammer will ask you to verify your social security number so they can "send you a new card" or make sure they "sent the correct card."

Again, this is a scam. Hang up the phone!

One person reported her caller ID indicated the call originated from Canada.

The Alamance County Sheriff's Office wants to remind citizens that the Social Security Administration will not call you asking for verification of a "new card." Social Security will send letters with changes or information regarding your benefits.

If in doubt, call the agency to verify the request.
