Snow. Ice. Doesn't Matter. Why You Have To Go To Work.

State officials do't have the authority to close private businesses due to weather conditions. Your employer can require you to work.
24/7 Wall St. reviewed 359 middle-skill occupations classified by the Labor Department.

GREENSBORO, NC -- The Governor has declared a state of emergency. And yet, your employer wants you to come to work! You might think there is a disconnect there but Delores Quesenberry, a spokesperson with the North Carolina Department of Labor says, "The first thing the general public needs to understand is that state officials do't have the authority to close private businesses due to weather conditions."

North Carolina is what is called an employment at will state which means your employer can require you to be at work regardless of what it looks like outside.
Your employer is not required to have an adverse weather policy and basically an employer may treat an employee as they see fit.

"If your employer is requiring you to come to work on a snowy day and you don't, they could release you," explains Quesenberry. "They don't have to give you vacation leave or they could require you to use vacation leave."
