What to do with your old turkey fryer oil and jack-o'-lanterns

A recycling expert explains the proper way to get rid of holiday waste and presents two Triad recycling events.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Halloween has come and passed. Your scary jack-o'-lanterns are even scarier because of decomposition. Do you know how to properly get rid of your waste?

Recycling expert, Masey DeMoss, explained the proper way to recycle your holiday waste.

What can you recycle?

  • Plastic bottles (soda, water, condiment bottles)
  • Plastic tubs (butter, cool whip, sour cream, etc.)
  • Plastic jugs (milk, juice, tea, etc.)
  • Cans (vegetables, soda, fruits, etc.)
  • Paper egg cartons

What is not recyclable?

  • Foil pans and aluminum foil
  • Disposable cups, plates, utensils, napkins/paper towels
  • Metal/paper tins (biscuit or Pringle tins)
  • Plastic bags/wrap
  • Plastic clamshells (desert or fruit containers)

Exceptions

  • Glass - drop off at recycling centers
  • Plastic shopping bags - drop off at grocery stores

Recycling Oil

You should never dump oil down any drain. It could potentially clog your pipes and lead to extensive repairs. There are two things you can do.

  1. Scrape cooking grease into the trash or a container to dispose of. Any oil that's room temperature can solidify and clog your pipes.
  2. Take your old cooking oil to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center to be recycled.
