Armour Star Chipped Beef Recalled Nationwide for Possible Toxin Contamination

Pinnacle Foods' ready-to-eat dried, sliced beef by Armour Star may have been tainted by staphylococcal enterotoxin and clostridial toxin.

Pinnacle Foods is recalling two Armour star dried beef products due to possible contamination.

The company that owns Birds Eye, Duncan Hines and Vlasic brands is recalling close to 32,500 pounds of dried beef due to possible contamination.

Pinnacle Foods' ready-to-eat dried, sliced beef by Armour Star may have been tainted by staphylococcal enterotoxin and clostridial toxin. The heat-treated food, produced between Jan. 2 and April 9, has a three-year shelf life.

The nationwide recall is for:

  • 2.25-ounce glass jars of Armour Ground & Formed Sliced Dried Beef with 2021 best-by dates of Jan. 7-11 and April 15-19 and lot codes 0707011Y11, 0708011Y11, 0709011Y11, 0710011Y11, 0711011Y11, 0715041Y11, 0716041Y11, 0717041Y11, 0718041Y11 and 0719041Y11
  • 4.5-ounce glass jars of Armour Ground & Formed Sliced Dried Beef with 2021 best-by dates of Jan. 23-25 and April 22 and lot codes 0723011Y11, 0724011Y11, 0725011Y11 and 0722041YW1

All have "EST. 2AD" inside the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s mark of inspection.

There are no reports of confirmed illness in people who ate the Fort Madison, Iowa, company's products, according to the USDA. Anyone who bought the dried beef is urged to throw it out or return it.

A USDA inspector discovered the problem on April 27 during a food safety assessment.

Symptoms of food poisoning include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea and people may feel like they have the flu.

Parsippany, N.J.-based Pinnacle Foods' other brands include Wish-Bone, Mrs. Butterworth's, Smart Balance, Mrs. Paul's, Aunt Jemina and Hungry Man.
