Protecting your pets with school back in session | 2 Wants to Know

Some easy tricks can make a big difference as you care for your pets.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Pets are family members, so it makes sense that people want to treat them with the best care possible. 2 Wants to Know talked with Dr. Kelley Gebhardt from Happy Tails Veterinary Emergency Clinic in Greensboro to learn some best practices.

With school back in session, your home may have a lot more coming and going than it did during the summertime. There are several ways to both protect your pet and help it adjust.

  • Try to make your departure and return as uneventful as possible so your pet doesn't get riled up.
  • Resist the urge to shower your pet with affection before you leave. It may worsen any separation anxiety it has.
  • Consider putting your pet in a separate room to avoid the risk of it getting out while people are shuffling in and out
  • Make sure any microchips or tags are updated in case they do escape.

Kids back in school means backpacks hanging around and the return of lunch bags. Things commonly found in those, like gum, chocolate, some fruits, school supplies and medications, can be very harmful to your four-legged friend. It's best to make sure those are kept out of reach.

Dr. Gebhardt suggests leaving toys out for your pets when you leave. It gives them something to do, so they aren't missing you. It also occupies their time, so they don't get too curious and get into something they shouldn't.

If you have a doggy door, make sure it works properly. The same goes for any crates you may use.
