RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – North Carolina drivers will no longer need to retake the road sign test to get their driver license renewed, officials confirmed.
The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles will continue to require sign and symbol testing as part of the issuance a driver’s first license in the state.
A vision test will be conducted during required in-person, in-office license renewals.
The change is part of Gov. Pat McCrory’s “Driving Change” initiative which aims to increase efficiency and improve customer service at driver license offices, officials said.
“We hope the change will help to streamline the issuance process and complement our other efforts to reduce wait and service times across the state,” said DMV Commissioner Kelly J. Thomas.
The policy change applies to the renewal of regular Class A, B and C driver licenses.

"If you're going for a renewal, you should already know all the road signs and understand what their meanings are anyway," Price said. "We haven't seen someone as a general rule get into a wreck because they didn't know what a road sign meant. Normally it's inattention, driving too fast or other violations such as driving too closely."
