GREENSBORO, N.C. — Over Thanksgiving AAA says about five million people hit the airports to visit family and friends. And many of them are bound to end up stuck in the airport waiting on delayed or cancelled fights. But this year there are new government rules to help!
If your domestic flight is delayed more than 3-hours, you can can get a refund if you don’t want to travel anymore.
The rules require a full automatic refund.. not flight credit or miles.. for a delayed or canceled flight.
Bag fees also have refunded if a checked bag is significantly delayed.. and passengers get a refund if services they paid for aren’t available.. like broken Wi-Fi.
Airlines are also now required to disclose fees up front for things liked checked bags, carry on bags, or changing or canceling a flight.
But there’s one big catch. On the Department of Transportation website. It says very clear that you are only entitled to the refund following a significant delay if “the consumer chooses not to travel.” So if you wait it out at the airport and still go on the trip, these new rules don’t help you.
