GREENSBORO, N.C. -- It's starting to get chilly outside and the one question kids want to know is about an animal that really loves the cold weather.
Mary said, "I want to know how many meals do penguins eat in one day."
Some penguins live atthe Greensboro Science Center,so we asked their keeper Carmen Murrayabout their eating habits.
Murray said, "Here at the Greensboro Science Center, we offer our penguins 2 meals a day, sometimes they show up to both meals and eat, sometimes they only show up to one, and sometimes they don't show up to any."
She saidin the wild, penguinsmostly eat anchovies.Butin the Sciquarium, they atcapelin, herring, and smelt.
Murray said, "On average, these guys eat somewhere between one to 2 pounds of fish a day. Now when they are going through the molt process, they need to gain a lot of weight because they're going to be out of the water for a long period of time. So they kind of put on a lot of weight and they can eat up to three to four pounds of fish a day." Murray said eating that much food is impressivebecause penguins only weigh seven to eight pounds.
Murray also mentioned molting. That was part of last week's kids want to know answer. You can watch that by clicking here.
